Trip Report: ONYX EXCURSION
Which took place on September 20, 2003

Onyx Excursion –by Jungle Jim

We couldn’t have picked a nicer day for our Onyx Excursion. It was foggy when we left home, but halfway through the canyon it cleared up and by the time we reached Redlands it was perfectly clear. Not one cloud in the sky.

After all had arrived, we headed up Highway 38 to higher elevations. Our caravan of 10 vehicles managed to stay together all the way to Onyx Summit. There we had a brief drivers meeting, aired down the tires, passed out maps, and had the first photo op of the day. Bruce passed out radios for everyone, so all could get in on the chatter.

Those participating were:

Judy & Lanny George

John Hursh & Dan Michael

Scott Grubb

Sam Barbee, Tiffany & Jeremy Dale

Bruce White

Austin & Michael Dix

Bob, Kevin & Mike Picciotta

Stacy & John Laird

Jim & Chi Carvin, doing the paperwork
and handing out topo maps with GPS waypoints.

As you can see from the photos, we had everything from a pure stock Toyota mini pickup with street tires, to a monster Blazer which, with its 35” tires, proved quite formidable when the going got tough.
