Rattlesnake Canyon Climb

Start your summer early with this second of our four adventures this year. This time our trailhead is in the arid high desert near Yucca Valley. There, midday temperatures often exceed 100 degrees. But don’t worry, we’ll immediately begin climbing up Rattlesnake Canyon, past cactus and Joshua trees, on our way to the 8000’ Onyx Summit with its tall pines and cool soothing breezes. Our drive will take us through one of the most beautiful parts of the San Bernardino National Forest.

This outing offers a great introduction to the joys of 4x4 driving, but also some exciting challenges for more experienced drivers. On our climb we will enjoy a a fun run through the narrow Rattlesnake Canyon, and encounter some soft sandy washes and steep rocky grades.

The route can be navigated by most stock 4 wheel drive vehicles, so even if you have never been off-roading, please plan to join us, invite your friends to ride along, and invite other fourwheelers too!

This outing offers a bonus: an optional PRIMITIVE CAMPOUT at a choice spot back down in the canyon after the run. Are you up for a campfire worship and a balmy night’s stay?

For more information, please stop by the Pavilion after the service Please click here to see the photos, videos and trip report of that event.

* Only STREET-LEGAL 4 WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES are permitted at this event.

This adventure is offered without charge. However, a National Forest “Adventure Pass” is required. It’s kind of like a parking permit for the forest. If you don’t already have one, these are available at REI and at Big Five Sporting Goods, These passes are $5/day or $30/year. (You’ll only need a 1-day pass, because the campout is outside the forest.) Please get one before the day of the event, and have it with you.
